Our Background

Benefits Ltd. is excited to be part of the dynamic health care market in the country today. Our insurance programs offer unparalleled service and value. Benefits Ltd., works through various insurance carriers that share the high standards of quality, value and innovation demonstrated by our company. The roots of Benefits Ltd. date to 1939 when G.H. Poulson Company wrote surgical medical coverage to coordinate with hospital coverage written by The Toledo Medical Society, later Blue Cross of Toledo.

This arrangement continued until 1954 when Blue Shield was formed and The Poulson Company became The G.H. Poulson Life Insurance Company. Not requiring our expertise in the surgical/medical field any longer, we helped design an innovative product called Major Medical to accompany the basic Blue Cross Blue Shield coverage’s.

In 1969 G.H. Poulson Life Insurance Company changed its name to The Standard Of America Life Insurance Company. At the same time, Standard of America was developing many other products to fill the gaps in benefit programs underwritten by Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

This was a period of tremendous growth that saw The Standard of America Life Insurance Company develop relationships with over 27 Blue Cross/Blue Shield Companies, as well as, various other Health Carriers. Standard of America jumped into the top 15% of all life insurance companies in the country based on coverage in force.

In 1976, The Standard of America Agency in the State of Kentucky was awarded the exclusive marketing and servicing rights to all small group business underwritten by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kentucky. During this time, we were developing new market places and expanding services to handle all types of insurance coverage offered by many carriers.

In 1986, Standard of America was sold to Northwestern Mutual to allow them access to other markets. The group business was sold to Ft. Dearborn Life Insurance Company, a subsidiary of Illinois Blue Cross.

At this time, Benefits Ltd. was born. Taking over where The Standard of America/Ft. Dearborn left off, RF Brown and Associates joined James Barta and Associates to form a dynamic agency with over 6O years of combined experience in the industry, expertise in product development plus a solid understanding of the employee benefit climate. We continued building our reputation on our background in the employer market and our relationship with many insurance carriers across the country.

In 1989 Benefits Ltd. obtained the first of many endorsements from state and national trade and professional associations. With the assistance of Daniel B. Howard, Executive Director of The Ky. Association of Regional Mental Health and Mental Retardation Programs, Benefits Ltd. formed relationships with numerous state and national Community mental health associations.

Thanks to the loyalty of our clients, Benefits Ltd. is proud to continue our relationship with the mental health industry into the next century.
